I have held several management and supervisory positions: Home supervisor for Res Care for 2 years and am presently supervisor with Charleston Telephone Answering Service; Manager for KFC for 6 years. This information is to let you know that I am a responsible person and one who knows finances. I realize the positions are a very big task and takes may volunteers.
Hi! My name is Sammy (Sam) Magner. I come form a small town in West Virginia and have been living in Charleston for the past ten years. I have enjoyed my life in the city and getting to know people in the GLBT community.

In the past I have worked with many other organizations to help them develop events and activities. Now, I am looking forward to helping Pride of West Virginia grow into a larger organization. WV Pride has grown over the years, putting together many wonderful events for our community. I would like to have the opportunity to take part in the future of pride. To do this I would like to help plan and create more exciting events for members of our community throughout the state. My vision is to see pride of West Virginia be in the top when it comes to pride festivals.

I hope you will give me the opportunity to serve the GLBT community

Thanks Sam Magner

Wishing Rainbow Pride of WV best of luck in 2010 , and seeking your vote as an at Large Board member candidate.

Kelly Wills

Scott King

Scott was Grand Marshall for the 2009 Pride Parade. If you didn’t see him there, chances are at some point in the last year you may have had him ask you if you were registered to vote. He was one of two openly gay delegates from West Virginia to attend the National Democratic Convention last year. He founded the first chapter of the Stonewall Democrats in WV and attended their 2008 convention as well. He is also active in the WV International Film Festival and previously served on the Board of Directors for the WV Humanities Council.

William Salyer

William Salyer is looking to serve as a Member at Large on the Rainbow Pride Board of Directors to help revitalize our current membership and see the organization grow. Prior to moving to West Virginia, William worked on the Tennessee Pride Committee with various fundraising events. William joined the Rainbow Pride of WV board serving as a member at large for eight years. Mr. Salyer recently completed his tenure as Vice President on the Rainbow Pride Board of Directors. William is dedicated to the GLBT community of West Virginia and seeing Rainbow Pride grow into a state wide organization.

Brooks Rollyson

Kenny Grady

Aaron Bradley

Carl Maxwell

“I believe that our community should come together and work toward the common goals of our community. The Rainbow Pride of West Virginia is an organization that has the community building mechanisms to facilitate the goals of our community. From my observation as a founding member of Rainbow Pride of West Virginia, we have made improvements to our community. We should strive harder and with fortitude, WE CAN accomplish our goals.”

Carl Maxwell is a founder of the Living AIDS Memorial Garden, along with late Jeff Huff and Bruce Severino. Mr. Maxwell is an registered architect.

Friends,

Despite the fact that just last week, the House of Representatives passed a transgender inclusive hate crimes Bill (Special thanks to Representatives Rahall and Mollohan), and

Despite the fact that last week the Maine State Senate voted out a Marriage equality bill for their state’s LGBT community, and

Despite the fact that a growing number of Americans support equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, and

Despite calls from moderates within the Republican party to bring an end to the exclusionary principles that got them creamed in the 2006 and 2008 elections, what does the WV State Republican Party do?

http://wvgazette.com/News/200905040128

That’s right. State Republicans in the House of Delegates have called on Governor Joe Manchin to add to the upcoming special session, legislation that would create a special election referendum defining marriage.

You may remember the promoters of this initiative trying to pressure the Governor like this before. He didn’t give in then, and we need to make sure he doesn’t give in now. Please, call the Governor’s office and ask him not to include this legislation in his special session agenda.

The number is 1.888.438.2731

Email: Governor@WVGov.org

Be sure to keep a polite and civil tone with whomever you speak with and in your email. Additionally, it will go a long way to point out that the Governor did not give in to this demand last fall, and he should remain consistent in NOT putting this issue on a special session agenda.

Thank you,

Organizer, ACLU of West Virginia

Just received word from the HRC that the US House has just passed Hate Crimes legislation, the Matthew Shepard Act. This legislation includes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people from bias-motivated hate violence.

As West Virginians, be aware of the following:

BOTH Representatives Nick Rahall and Allen Mollohan voted for Matthew Shepherd Hate Crimes Bill (HR 1913); Shelley Moore Capito voted with the Republican mainstream against the bill.

I repeat:

Shelley Moore Capito AGAINST the Matthew Shepard Act

This is far from over, we’re now awaiting a vote from the US Senate. Do your part.

It what seems like yet another reminder that younger generations can teach us a lot about ourseleves, a St. Albans High School student, Clayton Stover, petitioned the Kanawha County school board members to add sexual orientation to the school system’s cultural diversity policy.

We are humbled by such incredible courage to stand before such an audience, let alone live day to day in an environment as brutal as high school, while advocating for justice for ALL people…including those who are so easily maligned verbally and physically assaulted.

31st District House Delegate Carrie Webster also sent a letter to the Kanawha County Board of Education offering support of this addition.

School board general counsel Jim Withrow said the school system is already revamping its diversity policy. About four months ago, a group of teachers suggested the school board include sexual orientation in the policy, he said.

Board members could vote on the revisions as early as next month, he said.

Thank you Clayton for your courage to speak up. We are inspired.
