This year Rainbow Pride of West Virginia’s Pride Parade and Festival celebrates it’s 13th anniversary. This yearly event allows our community show everyone that we DO exist in West Virginia and are PROUD to be gay West Virginians. This is not about ’shoving it’ in anyone’s face, but a command that we at the very least deserve respect and recognition.

Hi, I’m the mother of a fifteen-year-old high school student (female) who recently came out to me and her friends. What would be the best way for us to participate in this event so that I can show support for my daughter? She is shy, but I don’t want her to feel at all ashamed about who she is. The one-mile Fun Walk? Do we need to sign up walk sponsors to participate in that?

    Kim,
I hope you are able to participate in events this pride week with your daughter and I think it is AWESOME that you want to attend events with her and support her.
The Rainbow Run is a great event for all ages. You can either gather sponsors or make a donation directly ($15-$25 depending on when you register etc.) It is a fun run and not very competitive, there is also the walk and dog walk. After the run there are a variety of booths set up by local organizations and churches. Groups such as SAGA, the Straight / Gay alliance will be there too.
The Prie Parade and Festival on June 7th are great community events. The parade starts at 1:30 at Haddad Park and goes to Davis Street Park where the festival lasts until about 5pm.
If you have an interest in religious perspectives on coming out etc. there is a great movie at Taylor books on June 3rd at 6:30. They will be showing “For The Bible Tells Me So” an award winning documentary and really amazing look at society. I saw it at St. John’s Episcapal church a few months ago and was impressed.

I hope this helps. Thanks again for being there for your daughter and reaching out! Try to pick up a pride guide at a local restaurant or business such as Tricky Fish.

    Enjoy pride!
    Lilianna

thank you so much for honering our gay community

  7. I am so thankful and PROUD that DownHome Decadence is able to be at least a little part of PRIDE this year! Rocky Horror has long been a staple in gay culture and we are proud to be continuing this tradition in West Virginia.

    Thank you for including us!!

Thanks for sending the news about Jim Lewis, my neighbor! It got me onto your website. Somehow, we’ve missed all your publicity this year. I hope our UUC ad made it into the booklet since we haven’t seen the booklet this year. Also, we plan to have a table at the festival but haven’t heard any confirmation on this. Please advise.

We are relocating to Charleston, W.Va and I am wondering where my partner and I should live. Any suggestions on a lesbian friendly or gay friendly area..I also have a 15 yr. old daughter that is moving with us. Any school suggestions or areas to stay away from?

    Thanks :)
